The week commencing 20^th July 2026 marks Farm Safety Week, an important industry-wide campaign supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). It provides an opportunity for everyone involved in agriculture to pause, reflect on current working practices, and review how risks can be better managed to improve safety across the sector. Taking the time to identify hazards and implement safer ways of working could ultimately help prevent serious injuries and save lives.

Agriculture, forestry and fishing continue to record the highest rate of work-related fatal injuries of any major industry in Great Britain. Over the past five years, the sector has averaged 28 work-related fatalities each year, with a fatal injury rate that is approximately five times higher than construction and 21 times higher than the average across all industries.

Vehicles remain the leading cause of fatal accidents on farms, alongside incidents involving falls from height, falling objects, livestock, and machinery. While these risks are well known, they can be effectively managed through proper planning, training, maintenance, and safe working procedures.

Improving the industry’s health and safety record requires commitment from everyone. Every farm business should take responsibility for identifying and controlling risks, ensuring that safety remains a core part of day-to-day operations. Particular attention must be given to protecting children. Farms are busy and hazardous workplaces, and young children should be kept away from work activities and operational areas wherever possible.
