Commercial Energy Efficiency announcement waters down the proposed energy requirements for smaller commercial buildings
30 June 2026

An announcement was made recently as a result of the Government consultation on Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) to non-domestic private rented buildings.

It was announced that from 2031, all private rental buildings over 1,000 m² will be required to reach a higher standard of energy efficiency to Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) B, where cost effective. Buildings with less than 1,000 m²  will continue to be subject to the EPC E minimum requirement.

The milestone and incremental step previously outlined for 2027 is not to be taken forward.

Further details on the revised proposals and their implementation is due to be published, and secondary legislation will need to pass Parliamentary scrutiny.

Robinson & Hall can advise on measures to improve energy efficiency, and we always consider MEES when preparing refurbishment schemes, alterations and new developments.
