On 14th September, the Government published a consultation on a new standard approach to assessing housing need. They hope that the proposed approach will help to reduce complexity and costs and increase transparency whilst delivering more housing. Whilst this is only a consultation paper it could have a significant impact on how councils calculate the need for housing with the likely impact being that a number of councils would no longer have a 5 year housing supply, thereby opening up additional areas for development. This is at an early stage with the full implications needing monitoring. One possible result may be local authorities speeding up their plan preparation to get ahead of the potential changes.
